An anal fistula is a tunnel that runs from within the anus (the hole in your body where solid waste is expelled) to somewhere in the skin surrounding it. It usually happens following an infection that did not heal properly. The fistula can be repaired, but it will require surgery. Just inside your anus are several fluid-producing glands. At times, they can become clogged or blocked. Bacteria can then accumulate and form a swollen pocket of infected tissue and liquid. Doctors will refer to this as an abscess. The abscess will spread if it is not treated. It will eventually make its way to the outside and pierce the skin near your anus, allowing the gunk inside to drain. The tunnel that connects the gland to the opening is known as a fistula. A fistula is most often caused by an abscess. It's rare, but it can also be caused by tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, or an ongoing bowel illness like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
